Production volume reached 1304.3 million tons; high energy cost remains the major challenge for the segment
The Brazilian Aluminum Association (ABAL) has published the primary aluminum production for 2013. According to ABAL, the production in period achieved 1304.3 million tons, which indicates a decrease of 9.2% compared to the volume of 1436.4 million tons produced in 2012.
The fall in production reflects the huge challenges primary aluminum producers have faced in recent years to manage their operations in Brazil, since the recently-announced exemption in energy which, despite deemed as breakthrough, has not reached a level that may help return the operating costs to a competitive rank.
